I fully support the designation of Alfred Bog as a natural environment class provincial park with minimal facilities and services. The park should be managed so as to "maintain and/or restore the security of the bog's natural sources of water" (Mosquin 1991). The park is vulnerable to water and nutrient loss from many drains, and to activities incompatible with the goal of protecting the rare species and habitats of the bog.
Therefore, I would like the management plan to include resources and the intention to:
- prevent use of ATVs in the park;
- fill in/block drainage ditches;
- negotiate transfer/purchase/long-term lease of those private lands (other than lands owned by NCC) within and adjacent to the park boundary, that will allow Ontario Parks to restore the security of the bog's natural sources of water and serve as a buffer for critical boundaries of the park;
- protect rare and endangered species at Alfred Bog;
- protect and expand the fen-like areas of patterned bog;
- minimize the loss of organic matter from erosion, oxidization and drainage.
