I am against any reduction in the Greenbelt, or swapping out Greenbelt space for space in other areas of the province. This is ecologically significant land that needs protection. Swapping it out for other spaces doesn't take into consideration the different needs of the lands, nor the communities around them.
I am concerned that the government has not adequately consulted with the Indigenous peoples who have been caring for these lands and waterways for thousands of years. They should have a say in the use of the land.
I'm further concerned that this is the tip of the iceberg and that, once approved, this proposal will be used to further reduce the Greenbelt. The point of the Greenbelt is to protect that land. Splitting it up and breaking it off goes directly against that.
Furthermore, I am extremely disappointed that the government campaigned on maintaining Greenbelt protections and within a few months is reversing that position. The housing crisis has been happening for years, under the Ford government. This is not an acceptable fix.
