Plans to develop the greenbelt are antithetical to the commitments made by the Ontario government and Canada to meet climate change targets. Is the issue really a lack of housing, a structural issue? Or is the issue a lack of densified, affordable housing that already exists in developed areas.
At some point, the government will have to make a choice. Do you continue on a path of development and capitalism for the sake of business? Or do we change how we view ourselves in relationship to the world? At present, we will continue down a path that permanently alters our climate. We already have changed the planet. Does Ford and his party realize that he too, is a human, not immune to the discomfort of a warming climate?
I urge the province to consider this development in the larger social and political context of the country and province. There is already so little trust in Ford, and so much animosity and energy towards governments who are blind to the climate. In an era where other governments offer free transit, and where Indigenous communities are demanding sovereign rights to their land, is developing the greenbelt (which Ford declared he would protect in 2018) advisable?
