There is already enough land ready for development or redevelopment within existing municipal borders. This does nothing to help speed up delivery of housing where it's needed, and instead opens these environmentally sensitive areas, far from major cities, to speculation and destruction without merit. Being that the supply of skilled labour, equipment and resources will not similarly increase to simultaneous allow the redevelopment of these greenbelt areas, it can only be concluded that this will instead further sequester away labour and resources from where they are needed and continue to make construction more expensive and difficult.
This is not an answer to building more houses faster. It trades priceless Ontario green space away to land speculators with no benefit to the vast majority of Ontarians currently in need of affordable housing near where they work. Moreover, the majority of the land that would instead be added to the greenbelt is already protected and is not a reasonable replacement for the land lost. The government is breaking their promise for no better reason than to benefit a few private individuals and businesses, and every other Ontarian will suffer this loss for generations to come.
