Before destroying valuable rural green space, Developers should be required to demonstrate they have exhausted any and all alternatives. This would create a movement to redevelop and densify older low-rise buildings in neighborhoods throughout the city of Toronto and its neighbouring communities. Incentives should exist to redevelop and build mid-rise communities on streets that are within walking distance of public transit. There also should either be incentives given for local farm producers, or penalties incurred on producers based on the distance shipped to get to market. Governments need to create a plan that ensures a farmer's profit for selling land to developers does not exceed the profit available for producing food.
