The rescindment of greenbelt protection undermines the whole premise of the program. Conservation zones are only useful if it is permanent, and not subject to the changing whim of political situation or short term economic benefits. The promise of adding other lands in further away, less valuable, already protected, or otherwise already unlikely to be developed areas is a red herring. Besides, if current protected land can be unprotected, what credibility will any of the future areas remain protected?

Greenbelt is designed to encourage density, and there are practical ways to increase housing without using more land. The population density of urbanized areas in GTA is far below those of other major cities, and we can surely build more condos or townhomes to increase housing without using more land.

We need to protect our lands and space for generations to come, and not sell-out for short term political gains or marginal economics profits for a few.
