I am outraged at this proposal. Not only was the public lied to in 2018 when the Ontario government said they wouldn't touch the greenbelt, but plowing over an entire agricultural preserve is extremely shortsighted. Ontario is losing farmland at an unprecedented clip and the lands outlined in Pickering are active prime farmland. The proposed weakening of conservation authorities also means that this development has more of a risk of causing freshwater pollution, being flooded, and damaging existing ecosystems that are already under strain from sprawl.
There's lots of underused land that's being taken up by strip malls, parking lots, and single family homes that can be up-zoned for density to provide more housing. Focus on making places more walkable, and start retrofitting the suburbs instead of plowing over greenspace and farmland.
