A couple of things.
1. the Greenbelt is not just a bunch of trees or empty land. The Oak Ridges Moraine fulfills a specific and important hydrologic function that ensures a flow of clean water into Lake Ontario and its tributaries. That is our drinking water. Chip away at the moraine and eventually our drinking water is degraded. So let's stop doing that.
2. There is still a LOT of room to expand housing within the boundaries of the already urbanized GTHA. Higher density is always better than unchecked sprawl. DO THIS FIRST.
3. More sprawl will not address the urgent concerns of an entire generation that cannot access the housing market so please let's not pretend that it will. These decisions seem designed to make a certain group of developers and speculators happy at the expense of everyone else. Some legacy, Mr. Ford.
Where does this end? Are we to continue the expansion of urban/suburban/exurban areas indefinitely? This is the path to total environmental destruction and the loss of every good thing about living in this area. I live in a single family home in a sea of single family homes in the 416. Contrary to what you hear from the NIMBYs, most of us are ok with densification if done strategically and appropriately.
And finally, you underestimate the value of the Greenbelt not only in physical terms but in terms of how much Ontarians in the GTHA value it as a priceless and important asset to be passed on to future generations. We will fight to save it, you can be assured.
