I am overwhelmingly concerned with the proposal to cancel Ontario's cap-and-trade system, which I believe is absolutely essential for responding to climate change and helping move society toward a greener future. By cancelling the cap-and-trade system, Ontario will fall further behind competing jurisdictions—both within Canada and abroad—who are benefiting from promoting a green economy while lowering their greenhouse gas emissions. Economists strongly agree that cap-and-trade systems are one vehicle for ensuring companies compensate for their negative, externalities (i.e., pollution). I believe the Government of Ontario should take on a leadership role in promoting a greener future by continuing on with the cap-and-trade system, publicly apologizing to the citizens it works for as well as Quebec and California (relationships it has surely hurt by proposing to leave the cap-and-trade system), and withdraw its legal battle against the federal government, which is costly and absolutely ridiculous.
