It is truly disappointing that other more reasonable avenues are not being discussed or implemented. The green belt is irreplaceable and should not be used for housing. Other methods such as higher capital gains taxes, a temporary ban on buyers for 2nd homes, a complete ban on foreign buyers/non citizens (including numbered corporations or shell companies for residential properties) and stricter heavily enforced rules (and bans in areas) for Air B&B. Also RENT CONTROL the reasonable thing that can be done to box in run away rental markets -want to charge more rent in a protected area? Then you pay significantly higher taxes on that difference and that taxes goes towards more community housing and infrastructure.
Would some of these things be unpopular? Yes. But that is to be expected when people are being greedy and don't want their gravy train to stop.
