Man made climate change is the most significant issue our society faces today. While cap and trade may only be a first step towards addressing this issue, it is nevertheless a first and significant measure. Cancelling the program seems, therefore, incredibly irresponsible. No good reason has been given for cancelling the program, nor has any alternative way to begin to address man made climate change been offered in its place. The Government of Ontario, regardless of which party is in power, owes the people of the province a plan to address climate change as best it can. The people of Ontario also deserve a Government that acts with integrity and offers reasons for proposing various policies, and also proposes ways to address climate change. If Bill 4 was proposed due to clearly defined deficiencies in the cap and trade program, or due to its alleged inadequacy in terms of actually addressing climate change, that would be one thing. But no such rationale has been offered, nor has the Government given any indication that it appreciates the threat that climate change poses to all Ontarians. The threat that climate changes poses to the people of Ontario -- and the rest of Canada and the world -- cannot be overstated. Yet Bill 4, and the discussion surrounding its introduction, does not reveal any strategy or plan on the part of the new Government for addressing climate change. The people of Ontario deserve more from their Government.
