Removing protected Greenbelt land to build the most inefficient, low density, car-dependant, monotonous, and disconnected homes in the periphery of the urban area is one of the most mind-boggling proposals I have heard to date. The Greenbelt was meant to zone off sprawling development and encourage densification of the land that we already use for urban zones. There are much better alternatives that would encourage more housing development and density that do not involve making the GTHA a bigger sprawling mess of low density car-dependant houses than it already is. These are the kind of points that are taught in elementary school social studies textbooks, and yet this is happening.
