Taking over greenbelt land for development sets a terrible precedent and won't actually do much to solve our housing crisis. Not only will we lose valuable green space near Toronto (whatever extra green space is planned to be add will be far away and of no benefit directly to Toronto residents), we will be green lighting exactly the sort of development that has led us to this housing crisis in the first place: single family detached housing that is car dependent. This sort of sprawl will not end and will only choke up our streets. What is needed is a strong push to increase transit access to new areas and build medium density housing. Large parts of Etobicoke, Scarborough and North York fit this mould are currently underutilized, being home to large single family homes.
This is no-win proposal. For existing car-dependent folks, this means more traffic on roads. For those who care about environment and cannot afford single family housing, this represents will clobber their valued public space for speculators and insiders to make a killing.
