Like millions of Ontarians, I am horrified for my children's and grandchildren's grim future if we don't drastically reduce carbon emissions now. If you are not going to use the revenues that came from the previous cap-and-trade program, then please find resources elsewhere (without reducing benefits to those on low income) so we can get to a carbon-free future no later than 2050.
There is no contradiction between a sustainable environment and lots of jobs. There are a huge number of sustainable jobs to be had for tradespeople in building and installing solar panels and wind turbines. And you can create many thousands of jobs in Ontario also by: increasing the production of mass transit vehicles (whose use will reduce carbon emissions, as long as transit is affordable for "the little guy"); massively increasing the retrofits of buildings and houses to make them energy-efficient (e.g. on sustainable energy, which would be a double win of good jobs, less carbon). You said you wanted to make life better for "the little guy" and this way you would be providing lots of good jobs, decreasing energy costs over time and saving the planet.
Another thing you should do to reduce hydro costs is to start buying cheap hydro power from Quebec. I don't understand why no government has done this sooner. The environmental destruction caused by building the dams in Quebec/Labrador is very unfortunate but cannot be undone; however we can benefit from the lower cost of this green energy, plus reduce our incredible dependence on nuclear power (with disaster just a matter of time, plus there is no safe way to store the toxic waste).
The other way of increasing green jobs is to provide better pay and working conditions for those at the low end of the pay scale;, again "the little guy". We need more personal care workers as our population ages, more children's day care workers so there is affordable care to relieve the pressure on parents, more teaching assistants - many of these workers are on low pay. These too are climate jobs in the sense that they are low-carbon and absolutely essential for our society to function well.
You have a golden opportunity to massively reduce carbon emissions in Ontario. You will be ridiculed and condemned for decades to come if you do not take advantage of it. Please help make Ontario a climate leader, not a dinosaur. Thanks for reading this.
