As a resident of St. Catharines, I object. Given the current climate change crisis, now is not the time to decrease the amount of green spaces and wet lands. There is already a lot of urban sprawl, leading to encroached fauna and wildlife. Removal of land from the greenbelt or protected green spaces will lead to the destruction of significant wetlands, floodplain infringement, and drinking water quantity/quality degradation.
The government should also focus on providing affordable housing using current zoning areas and empry lots. The proposed bill does not ensure that the lands taken from the greenbelt will be used for affordable housing and not for property investors. If the government truly wanted to provide affordable housing, there are several enpty lots near Queenston and Berryman avenues that would be suitable for building affordable housing for low income individuals.
Again, I object to this bill.
