This move by the provincial government to legislate expansion of a municipal urban boundary, countering a municipal decision based on fulsome community consultation, undermines the legitimacy of municipal government and is a violation of the public trust. This is a jurisdictional overreach that should be challenged in the Supreme court. It will benefit new home developers and not new or established Canadians in Ontario seeking a variety of new housing opportunities. There is plenty of undeveloped and formerly industrial land within the urban boundary, the development of which would bring greater economic benefits and more diversity to the urban core of Hamilton. As always, the Ford government wants to use a hammer to fix a problem that is complex and requires a nuanced, thoughtful and multi-pronged approach.
