My city is developing rapidly. A vote was made on whether to expand the urban boundary and a strong campaign was led by developers to get the people to vote yes. The people in my city overwhelmingly voted no for several reasons, including fears over losing quality farmland close to home, spending money building new infrastructure when we have aging infrastructure in n the city that needs to be built, concerns over sprawl and how it affects the community.
If the GTA is set to grow by 500 000 per year, perhaps it’s time to look at building like cities we actually want to be like. We need to be building up, not out. We need to be more efficient with our land use. We need livable cities with vibrant communities. We don’t need more subdivisions and strip malls.
The people in this city voted no to expansion even though city council was overwhelmingly supportive of developers. It feels like now those developers just appealed to the province to get what they want. Democracy is supposed to be the will of the people, not the will of corporations. What Doug Ford’s government just announced undermines democracy.
