The greenbelt, and Ontario's various conservation areas were established for a reason. They are essential to our local environment, to our plant and animal species, and to our own society as they help prevent disasters like flooding.
Cutting down on the limited protected space we already have is foolish and short-sighted. If Ontario's population needs to grow, it needs to grow smart. That means increasing urban density, making use of existing infrastructure, and encouraging cooperative housing developments. Urban sprawl is bad for the environment, and more costly for taxpayers due to the need to lay new infrastructure.
