Building over the Greenbelt doesn’t play to Ontario’s strengths in financial services, education, technology, manufacturing, or agriculture. Instead it’ll hurt our agricultural yields. We’ll even be stuck bailing out flooded basements because they’re too close to underground rivers and wetlands. Houses like that don’t add synergistic value to economies like ours.
People want affordable homes near good jobs and schools. Let’s put them in our economic hubs to strengthen the tax base. Let’s nurture higher incomes and property values. Build mid-rise buildings along the LRT in vibrant Kitchener-Waterloo, near college campuses, and transit stations across Ontario.
Forget about putting homes far away from destinations. Life will be too boring. Let’s double down on our city centres and main streets. Let’s make our province prosperous, and let’s do it smart.
