Why are we paving over our green belt when our cities and suburbs have hugely under utilized space? We should be focused on improving that develop spaces we already have, improving public transportation, neighborhood composition, walkability/bikability, etc. The design of our cities and suburbs are terrible. Having grown up in Oakville the cities design was actively harmful to my mental health. Instead of building more of the same and repeating our failures. Adding more traffic, destroying the environment, and creating fundamentally unlivable environments.
Why don't we focus on better utilizing the spaces we already have, zone like Germany, design like the Netherlands. We have an opportunity to even make it better than those places. Canadian style even. We need to focus on building communities, areas that are inclusive and allow us to live without restraints of cars. We should build a neighborhood where kids can play outside, where we can walk to coffee shops, where people are prioritized.
Paving over valuable environment to build more of the same problem causing spaces is just disappointing when we have an opportunity to build something better.
