I strongly oppose this. In 2018, Doug Ford promised to listen to the people and not touch the greenbelt, and the government has continued to promise this in recent years (until now). The Greenbelt is protected for a reason; it provides vital ecosystem services. This is a dangerous precedent. This is not responsible growth.
Conservation Agencies were not consulted prior to Friday’s announcement and this proposal is inconsistent with our prior guidance from the Province. Why is that?
There were 55 recommendations for the Housing Affordability Task Force report that gave alternatives to developing the greenbelt. This proposal is not a necessity. We need high density low income housing within Toronto. We need to expand housing in the areas we already live, not increase urban sprawl.
It feels like this government is taking advantage of a healthcare crisis and an education crisis to sneak this in and pave the way to develop areas the majority does not want you to touch. Unacceptable - Find another way.
