We are in a time where fighting climate change has gotten the most dire, and housing vacancies are at an outrageously high rate. This is not the time to be destroying our greenbelt. We need that land intact more than ever, especially when this proposal does not solve the issues it addresses. A good portion of the greenbelt is comprised of wetlands, which is uninhabitable due to flooding. However, developing the land around these areas also poses a risk to its stability. We are currently facing a rental and housing crisis like never before, but the issue is not the number of homes, but access to them. When Toronto in particular has (within the last 5 years alone) had a 40% increase of housing units not being occupied by residents, the problem then lies with inflated rent and housing costs. Building more homes will not fix the issue of making them accessible to families when they still cannot afford them. Sacrificing this natural lifeline will only further weaken our fight against climate change, and make a bleaker future for everyone who has to deal with the consequences
