I object to this proposal in the strongest possible terms. Providing housing so far outside of urban centres will not help those most in need of housing, such as low income people and new immigrants. Cities can be denser instead. The Greenbelt had been designated as a protected area for good reason and it can’t just be shifted according to city planning logic. This is a shortsighted proposal that will also be bad the the environment in an additional way: adding carbon emissions from the long commute that new residents in these areas would have to take to work. Finally, the Greenbelt contains established ecosystems, headwaters, and fragile areas that can’t just be substituted for other land elsewhere. Do not allow development of any parts of the Greenbelt!
I am writing this as a resident of Toronto and a lifelong resident of Ontario, a province full of forests and wetlands that future generations should be able to enjoy.
