Cutting into the green belt would mean getting rid of a valuable carbon sink that is greatly needed as emission levels go up, and doing so is in no way guaranteed to fix the housing crisis. Developing out will never be the solution when we already have rental units and houses sitting empty on currently developed land. This destruction of a natural ecosystem should not be explored until every other housing option (such as taxing empty units heavily, building more midrises, and ending single family house zoning is addressed). Not until every other avenue of city developed housing is explored would I even consider development on the green belt.
