BILL 23 is a disaster for Heritage, and I do not believe it will address the affordable housing crisis.
The proposed amendments to the Ontario Heritage Act under Bill 23, the “More Homes Built Faster Act-2022” has been described by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario as a “cluster bomb of changes” and as “disaster,” “misguided,” “poorly thought out,” “confusing,” “baffling” and “counter-productive” as it aims to dismantle Ontario’s heritage preservation system.
Given that Bruce County planners have forecasted that Saugeen Shores will have a surplus of 1,330 homes by 2046, and given that heritage properties “Listed” (but not “Designated”) represent only 2.3% of the buildings in Southampton, removing our “Heritage Listed” buildings from the “Heritage Register” after two years is completely unnecessary and counter-productive. Developers have a wealth of other choices for development sites.
