Developing on existing Greenbelt areas, which were designated as such for a reason, is a decision with very long-term effects, which are irreversable, and which will negatively affect us, our children and future generations.
In addition it is obvious that developpers have anticipated the changes in the designation of current Greenbelt areas and would therefore enjoy undue profits, which immediately leads to suspicions that members of the current Ontario government benefit from this, and that the decision making process is therefore anything but objective - too good to be true for those developers.
Geographically Ontario is big. I am therefore sure that you and the Ontario government are able to come up with viable alternatives. You do not have to build on existing Greenbelt areas. Those are irreplacable.
If a referendum were held today to choose between sacrifycing farmland or existing Greenbelt areas, a majority of voters would not understand why the current Greenbelt should be sacrificed, while new farmland (outside the Greenbelt) can be found elsewhere in Ontario.
My request to the Ontario Government is to ensure the implementation of long term solutions, acceptable to virtually everyone in Pickering and in Ontario, while at the same time making sure that your legacy is not negatively affected.
