Everyone in Ontario would agree that we need new housing, but it has to be done right. The principal in development of "growth pays for growth" has long been a good and logical one, but it is missing from the proposed changes to the Planning Act and Development Charges Act. The City of Toronto, for example, will have an annual negative impact of more than $200 million. Holy moly!

A report from City of Toronto staff claims that, as a result of this lost revenue, "the City would have no choice but to postpone or not proceed with numerous capital projects. In the absence of the Province offsetting lost funding, these revenue losses limit [the City's] ability to advance the necessary infrastructure to support new housing and has the effect of limiting housing supply." Whoa! Wasn't the purpose of this legislation to get more housing built? Clearly, if the opposite is going to occur, the legislation needs to be rethought.

Please take the time to get this legislation right. It's going to impact the people of Ontario for generations.
