I strongly object to this proposal to remove designated lands from the Greenbelt. This proposal breaks the promise of the Premier in the last two elections, and the promise of Ontario to future generations that this land would be preserved for farming, green space, and wildlife!
While the need for affordable housing in Ontario is something I agree with, these lands are not needed for this purpose. As a coalition of groups that came together to protect the Greenbelt note:
"There is no need to remove 7,400 acres of valuable farmland and natural areas from Greenbelt protection when 88,000 urban acres across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) are already primed for development."
And as one former Toronto mayor notes:
"If the Premier doesn’t put the brakes on these ill-considered plans, we’ll have more sprawl and much less local food and protection against flooding and the climate crisis."
We must keep these Greenbelt lands green, for our children, for a cooler climate, and for the wildlife we share this province with.
