I am opposed to the revocation of the Central Pickering Development plan. While the plan may have room for improvement, there has clearly been a lot of though put into the plan, and creating a sustainable and complete community. The Province should be encouraging the plan to go ahead, in fact, as it highlights exactly the type of community that we should be striving to create to achieve multiple economic, environmental and social goals INCLUDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING. Arbitrarily revoking the plan to allow some unspecified type of development, when there is a well though out design for an affordable, and more sustainable model community is a poor idea. The plan is not "regulatory burden", it is not "red tape" it is a well though out plan and should be left alone. I would not be opposed to amendments for example that allowed for a greater amount of density, or mixed use development within already designated development areas, but to scrap the plan all together to allow for some unspecified development is a bad idea. If the province wants to speed up development they should assist the city of Pickering by providing funds for more staff to process the applications in the municipality (and at the provincial level) rather than eliminating necessary regulations that make communities a good place to live.
