Bill 23 and its policies are ill advised, poorly constructed, and will only serve to impoverish our province and make the term "Conservative" ironic and infamous.
We are in the middle of, not only a climate crisis, but a series of unprecedented mass extinctions and Canada is one of the few countries that still respects biodiversity and works for sustainable and regenerative solutions. But these plans are an assault on our democratic process, turn environmental protection back over 50 years, and promote private over public interests. They serve developers.
Most importantly, there are already exiting plans to create affordable housing in areas that will not damage the sustainable viability of our province. These lands have already been designated for housing in areas that will not irrevocably harm the environment on which we depend. There is more than enough land earmarked for development, but Bill 23 promotes more urban sprawl, more commuter traffic, and pollution without protection. https://environmentaldefence.ca/2022/10/31/ontarios-housing-bill-is-act…
If the Ford government encourages the destruction of sensitive ecosystems, they put future groundwater resources at risk and open the gates for increased flooding, drought, and pollution of our rivers. Paving over productive farmland, Greenbelt protected areas, aquifer recharge areas, wetlands, woodlands and wildlife habitat spell disaster for the farmland and natural areas that sustain us.
It's terrifying that these plans ignore the climate crisis entirely. They are financially disastrous because, if accepted, they will contribute to increased weather disturbances ... floods, fires, landslides, sink holes, tornados. The Conservatives, by supporting this plan will be instrumental in loss of housing due to disasters they will have helped cause.
We don’t have to choose between housing and the environment. These plans are unacceptable. Instead of more homes built faster, we need more planning done smarter and with long term ideals. Indigenous cultures project their planning into the 7th generation. The question is - do we want a future for our children and their children's children ... ?
Don't contribute to de-futuring our province. Make the right choice and kill this bill!
