I am very upset that these significant changes are being made to the Greenbelt. The Greenbelt is intended to be conserved PERMANENTLY to prevent urban sprawl, to protect important corridors for animals to travel, and to preserve the natural vegetation. Forests are not easily rebuilt—we have been discovering more and more about the microorganisms in old growth forests that help them thrive and protect them against invasive species. These areas were designated as the Greenbelt because they are ecologically significant. Other strategies for increasing housing MUST be found. We need to build up and not out.
I am very disappointed that despite the negative feedback from the first proposal to build into the Greenbelt and the subsequent promises not to, that this government is proposing yet again to do this.
