 The plan doesn’t identify the existing unique dark sky characteristics of the Slate Islands and the potential for increases utilization by photographers and star gazers. Photographers have and will travel into deserts and almost to the ends of the earth to find truly dark skies to capture the stars.

  1.Consideration should be given to recognizing the unique dark sky feature of the Slate Islands in the ‘Plan’: Introduction, Planning Context, Purpose and Vision Statements, Objectives and Park Values/Other Significant Values.

 2.Consideration should be given to obtaining the designation of ‘Nocturnal Preserve’ by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada; which is essentially a nature preserve that highlights the importance of keeping the nights naturally dark.

 Note: The contents of these documents (initial version) have been adopted in 2008 by Parks Canada as their "Best Practice" in all federal park facilities.
