After Doug Ford was elected premier for the first time, he promised not to allow development on the greenbelt after he saw the widespread public disapproval of this proposal. At that time he stated there was a housing crisis but clearly pointed out that there were "alternative ways" to deal with it. So his excuse to develop the greenbelt now, has no basis at all.
By Doug Ford's own words the promise to develop the greenbelt is corrupt because it rewards land speculators who were major donors to his campaign. Here is a quote from the Toronto Star:
"Could we learn anything by recalling the time in 2010 when Doug Ford sat with his brother Rob for an interview with the Toronto Sun and discussed how a business had been given a sole-source contract, which — and this part might sound familiar — was contrary to established procedure, and came after giving donations to a politician involved?
Rob Ford said then, “It stinks to high heavens.”
“And then you find out the owner’s contributing to the guys who are voting for him?” Doug, the man who is now premier, said at the time."
