I am not involved in municipal planning, so I have no credible expertise in this area. I am very concerned (in fact pretty positive) that this step will set a precedence to systematically continue to remove these lands. I am in support of municipalities deciding how to best serve their communities. The rezoning of the Greenbelt lands will force communities to "develop" these lands. Maintaining these areas not only serves to protect natural ecosystems (including wildlife, forests, and water), but provides important access to these natural spaces for the people who live near these areas. Peer reviewed research from around the world has consistently shown the importance of such areas for human physical and mental health. Access to natural areas is regarded as a priority in family decisions on where to locate. Ontario has been an example of forward thinking and planning in setting aside these important lands. The Ford government's move to reverse this speaks to a disregard for the current and future well being of the people and the environment in the Golden Horseshoe. Both need protection now more than ever - that was the vision of the Greenbelt.
