Although the focus of climate change (which is real) has focused on the burning of fossil fuels the main cause has been conveniently hidden/forgotten.

The UN report entitled "Livestock's Long Shadow" (2006) estimated that about 18% of green house gases (which includes not only CO2 but especially methane and nitrous oxide, two potentially reversible gases, which are 20 to 30 times more potent than CO2) come from the livestock industry.

The World Watch Institute Report,"Livestock and Climate Change"(2009), estimated that the livestock industry actually produces closer to 51% of all green house gases. This is an astounding result when considered.

What's most important to recognize (which is why I mention it again) is that many of these gases, i.e. methane and nitrous oxide in particular are a) 20-30 times more potent than CO2 in causing climate effects and b) are in fact 'reversible'!

This compares to only 14% of green house gases that come from transportation sources i.e. burning of fossil fuels.

Hence I implore this government to take action to address this important and forgotten primary and reversible cause (i.e. the production and consumption of animal products) of not only climate change but over 80% of current chronic health conditions such as obesity, cardio vascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and many more that are currently crippling our health care system, our economy, our individual/collective performance and competitiveness on the world stage!

So if this government is truly committed to making Ontario thrive economically and save money in the process it will seriously consider and act on this information. Not to do so would be to fail at it's mandate to serve the people of Ontario as Mr Ford so proudly says he intends to do.
