The type of housing we need at this time is affordable housing right in the major centres for the working poor without cars - the folks who string together two or three jobs, as well as first home buyers just getting started in life. The type of housing that will be built in the Greenbelt areas outside major centres will not address this housing crisis. There are an abundance of 'new developments' of large homes in green spaces outside major centres, in the million dollar range, with high maintenance costs, that require families to have more than one car to commute to their reasonably well paying jobs in more distant centres. More of these types of development do not address our housing crisis. We need this investment to be put into affordable housing developments right in the major centres. Taking valuable green space from the hard won Greenbelt areas that contribute to every Ontarian's health and well being, and help us face the years of climate change with more resilience up ahead, is not advisable. It will add yet more unsustainable expensive housing stock out in the lovely countryside. However, I applaud ADDING to the Greenbelt! Great idea to focus on the Paris Galt headwaters! But the proposal to remove all these other pockets of land from the Greenbelt in the outlying areas around major centres does not make sense if you want to solve the housing crisis. Find land right in those centres, and make sure the developments are 'affordable' housing developments for the working poor.
