While the addition of lands in the area of the Paris Galt Moraine is more than welcome the removal of lands from the existing Greenbelt should be put on hold until the ethical questions around the land are cleared up. It has been reported in various media including the Globe and Mail and on the CBC that portions of Greenbelt land were purchased BEFORE the official announcement of this bill was made. This points towards an information leak from the ministry giving an unfair advantage to the purchasers and calling into question the whole process. Furthermore, nowhere in the Housing Commission report was any mention made of lands from the Greenbelt being required for housing, in fact sufficient land already exists to satisfy the requirement. It is highly unlikely that anything built on Greenbelt land would be considered “affordable” and will only contribute to sprawl and further erode wetlands and endangered species.
