I am very concerned about this proposal both environmentally and as an option to address the housing crisis.
The greenbelt is protected land and it worries me that we would be willing to break those protections so easily. There have been many calls from experts that the greenbelt is both critical for agriculture and has irreplaceable wetlands and ecosystems. Much of the land that has been deemed as potential to replace what will be taken is already protected locally, is not comparable in the quality of the land it is replacing or will have significant impacts on the community that it is part of.
As for housing concerns, Maytree puts it exceptionally well that the amendments will not be effective at addressing the housing needs: https://maytree.com/publications/more-affordable-housing-for-whom-putti…
Please reconsider the bill and its amendments.
