We are in a climate emergency and we cannot allow this government to sacrifice our environmental protections for development, when we know there are so many other alternatives to creating new homes. There are so many problems with this legislation:
- ignoring the impact less green space has on the environment, on people’s health, and people’s mental health is foolish and shortsighted
- the long-term implications will create expensive problems - increased health costs for one
- pandering to the elite few who are counting on making a profit from their previous purchases of greenbelt land is undemocratic
- creating a sense of distrust about the government’s links to developers - the suspicions of government corruption and unethical behaviour undermines a civil society
- being unrealistic about how this land will contribute to the affordability of housing misleads the public because the kind of housing built there won’t meet the needs of the people who are seeking affordable housing
—-there are no social or recreational services, public transportation, schools, stores near by
—-it’s impossible to just walk or cycle to get places, you need a car—not everyone can afford a car
