Destroying the greenbelt is very short minded and damage to important lands like this can’t be mitigated. These headwaters for the GTA contain the lifeblood for Lake Ontario and residents downstream. Within the greenbelt are precious headwater wetlands that help to lessen flood risks and most of our rivers start out in these hills.
When wetlands are destroyed and headwater creeks and rivers are altered, this adds to the climate change crisis by releasing carbon and methane .
Government should be looking to the future for Ontario and looking for other ways and areas to build houses. The answer is to build up in areas already occupied with houses and businesses. Adding to urban sprawl is not needed and transportation to these areas will add more cars on our overcrowded highways.
Let’s not get into a situation as seen in the UK and parts of Europe where rewilding is needed in order to rejuvenate natural areas and bring back lost species. Do the right thing and scrap Bill 23 and other bills that destroy our natural heritage. Once the greenbelt is gone it’s gone forever and how are you going to explain this to your grandchildren?
