The Greenbelt was created to protect certain landscapes and watersheds from just this sort of proposed damage and destruction. Fundamental questions need to be asked and answered, such as:
1.What is the point of creating the Greenbelt if it can be hacked away at in this way? Does this action not jeopardize the integrity of the Plan?
2. The Premier was elected on a promise to protect the Greenbelt. Does this action not call into question the legitimacy of his governance and these proposed changes?
3. The proposed.changes lead to habitat destruction. How many threatened and endangered species would be adversely affected?
4. The proposed changes will increase urban sprawl. How will the impacts on climate change be mitigated? How can they be justified?
5. The government's own task force on housing has indicated that destroying parts of the Greenbelt was not necessary for meeting the housing objectives. Given that, what is the justification for the proposed changes in the Greenbelt Plan?
