I think this is a very bad, shortsighted idea. The green belt protects our local rivers, ravines, flora and fauna. In addition, it may reduce Toronto/Ontario’s self sufficiency as more and more or the provinces prime farm land gets paved over… irretrievably.
It seems to me that housing developer will be the ones who benefit over anyone else. And the net result will be a poorer environment and increasing reliance on fossil fuels as the new residents will have limited options for transport aside from driving.
I’d favour more urban intensification (family appropriate, medium-rise buildings, not the high-end, poorly built flashy condos) along with increased cycling and public transport infrastructure.
