Bill 23 must be scrapped. This bill, supposedly aimed at building affordable housing faster, will do no such thing. If housing is to be affordable then homes need to be accessible to affordable public transportation, near services and work, and economical to heat and maintain. How can homes built on the edge of an already sprawling city costing near $1 million be affordable? Not only is bill 23 an omnibus bill that will erode the power of Conservation Authorities, destroy sensitive green belts and arable farmland, it will also pad the pockets of Premier Ford’s developer buddies and give Mayors unprecedented power and control. This bill is purely a political knee jerk reaction to a very serious housing issue. The destruction it will render will never be mitigated.
In todays world where we can learn from past mistakes and heed best practices in other countries, the kind of bad development proposed by Bill 23 is unconscionable.
