I am vehemently opposed to the development of the existing Greenbelt lands. I am also opposed to removing any lands from Greenbelt protection in order to then develop them. There are large amounts of other land that is available for housing without encroaching on the currently protected Greenbelt. Furthermore, we should be developing housing resources that meet the needs of our growing urban population rather than expanding the suburbs with thousands of single-family dwellings that most people cannot afford. Lastly, by allowing developers to no longer pay the development fees they have been required to pay in the past, they will simply pocket this money while the municipalities will be forced to raise property taxes in some cases as much as 80%. This is insane. It makes no economic sense, it makes no sense with regard to meeting the need for increased affordable housing, and it makes no environmental sense. It ONLY makes sense if you are lining the pockets of the already-wealthy developers. I call for a full public inquiry into this entire debacle, staring with how it was that the developers knew to buy up large swathes of land along the proposed 413 highway route. This whole thing stinks like a rotten fish.
