I strongly oppose the Proposed Amendments to the Greenbelt Plan. My concerns are as follows:
the Amendments seriously undermine the effectiveness and relevance of Conservation Authorities;
I fear the government intends to allow development on Conservation Authority properties in the future as indicated by requiring a list of all said properties;
further loss of habitat despite recent reports on the crisis of species loss, largely due to habitat destruction;
potential damage or further loss of wetlands, despite knowing their importance in flood mitigation and protection of water quality;
further loss of agricultural land;
the continued sprawl of urban development, which will most likely take the form of large, single family dwellings which will not contribute to providing affordable housing.
I am also concerned about the manner in which this legislation was introduced. The current government has apparently abandoned any pretence of honouring the democratic process.
