Developing into the greenbelt will weaken Ontario and Canada by irreversibly destroying farmland and important natural spaces. As food production becomes increasingly strained in North America due to drought and high water usage, we will want every inch of arable land we have.
Moreover, sprawl is expensive to deliver services to and maintain infrastructure for. It will increase municipal shortfalls government debt for future generations.
The primary focus of all housing development should be high density urban infill. The municipalities know this, but the provincial government has overridden them in the favour of developers having lower costs.
There needs to be co-ordination from the Federal government due to their high per capita immigration targets around 500k/y, to make sure both current residents and new immigrants can thrive in Ontario.
