The unfortunate thing about democracy is that the politicians we vote for can go back on their word, with little recourse until the next election cycle. The proposal in this case is the perfect example.
I oppose the amendments in the strongest possible terms. The only changes to the Greenbelt should be additions, no removals, or switches. The proposed substitutions are not apples to apples.
There has been no explanation for why this land is required to build homes. Nor has it been addressed that these homes will be affordable other than the vague argument of supply and demand which has not held true in Ontario’s housing market.
The fact that the land in question was set aside and labeled as such presupposes its value. I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.
This is our legacy. Let’s leave the Greenbelt alone.
