In the strongest language possible, please register my strong opposition to any proposed amendments that reduce the protection and or reduce the existing lands protected under the "Greenbelt Plan."
The Greenbelt Plan and the protection in place are the result of over 30 years of progress to protect environmentally sustaining lands that we as a species need. There should be no need to re-visit all the many reasons the protection was put in place; the science, the biology, the benefits to quality of life to all Ontarian's was clearly provided during consultations on the Greenbelt Plan.
It has been forwarded by the current Provincial Government Leadership that some of this protected land is needed to address the "Housing Crisis" in Ontario's GTA. That is not an accurate assessment of the situation as Ontario has already committed projects and lands identified for future development that can address Ontario's future housing needs. This situation is an "Affordable Housing Crisis" that opening up the Greenbelt will do nothing to address.
Furthermore the proposal suggests to remove targeted lands NE of Toronto in favour of adding a greater amount of land to Greenbelt protection. This does not recognize the environmental significances of the currently protect land as it the source of much of the ground water supplies for the GTA, an important wildlife corridor, and many other identified benefits.
The proposed changes will undo 30 years of progress on wetland protection. It is shameful, regressive and abhorrent to me.
Again, I am in opposition to any changes that remove existing protected lands or weaken the existing Greenbelt Plan.
