The proposed removal of Greenbelt lands sets a shocking precedent, opening the Greenbelt to development at the request of those who stand to reap big profits – and at the expense of the rest of us. Stripping these 7,400 acres of protection would unleash a flurry of land speculation and development pressures across the entire Greenbelt. This is wrongheaded and ultimately harmful to many aspects of the environment we all live in. The Ontario government misled the public about its intentions in regard to the Greenbelt, because they felt it would hurt their chances of electoral victory. Now that everyone can clearly see their true and reckless intentions (ie, to open up the Greenbelt to developers), voters will finally have a good reason to vote out the current government in the next election.
