To remove 7,400 critical acres of the Greenbelt to make way for new housing development is a flagrant breaking of Ford's government's 2018 promise to protect this life-sustaining ribbon around the GTA. Ford said:" the people have spoken. I'm going to listen to them.”
The moraine is a cushion of humanity, civility, care for species other than our own, and care for our own species. It represents caring for the future, our water, our air through transpiration of tree leaves, of holding water in the area, of limiting flooding, of beauty and relaxation for people.
The More Homes Built Faster Act is a travesty of urban planning. It overrides democratic process, strips
Municipalities and Conservation Authorities of their voice in planning decisions, erases
measures to foster densification and will promote sprawl with unaffordable, inefficient
McMansions that do nothing to address the housing crisis.
All this against the backdrop of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt, where
UN Secretary General António Guterres told world leaders, “We are on a highway to climate
hell with our foot on the accelerator.”
Removing land from the Oak Ridges Moraine, taken together with the attack on Conservation Authorities, the Growth Plan, the Planning Act, the Endangered Species
Act, the Ontario Heritage Act and other important legislation, dismantles decades of slow
progress toward protecting Ontario’s environment and creating more sustainable
communities. We cannot let this happen.
The oak Ridges Moraine is a jewel inn southern Ontario and is serving of our protection so that we can protect ourselves.
